The holidays are upon us, so let the shopping stress commence! While women seem to be easy to buy gifts for—get us anything that pampers, indulges, or beautifies and we’re set—men always pose an interesting challenge. What do you buy for the guy in your life? If you still haven’t figured out his preferences, a little help from the stars might be in order. Whether it’s your husband, brother, mailman, grandpa, or platonic male friend, here are some gift-buying tips for the men in your life:
- Go-Go Gadget. Not to discredit the historical contributions of females, but there’s a reason why man invented the light bulb and learned to walk on the moon. It seems guys have an inherent need to tinker–especially Monkeys and Sheep. Why not get him the latest GPS device, an electric bottle opener, or some new lenses for his camera? Whatever his hobby, there’s bound to be a gadget that will make it more fun.
- Get Your Tickets! Does the thought of suffering through another afternoon on the bleachers to watch his favorite sports team make you nauseous? Give him a reason to take a friend! Athletic Horses and adventurous Tigers will probably love a pair of great seats at the ballpark or hockey rink. If he’s not a jock, grab tickets for his favorite band.
- Clothes. Is your man is in need of a wardrobe upgrade? Or maybe he’s already got an eye for style? Most guys actually like getting clothes—mainly because it saves them a trip to the mall. Whether it’s a sharp tie, a T-shirt with his favorite band’s logo, or a new snowboarding jacket, clothes usually go over well with any guy.
- Books and Movies. The philosophical Snake or curious Rat will love a good read. Pick up a classic he loved in college or browse the best-sellers list for inspiration. If he’s not a bookworm, why not grab some DVDs of his favorite show or a few movies he’ll love.
- The Gift Card. Some think the gift card is a cop out—an easy way to give an impersonal gift—but it’s a no-fail way to make sure he gets what he wants! Whether it’s for Starbucks, Netflix, Amazon, Best Buy, or Barneys, these little plastic trinkets are available for practically every retailer known to man. The practical Ox or nit-picky Rooster will appreciate this no-fuss gift.
- Food. Haven’t we all heard that the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach? For Pigs and Dogs, this is especially true! If you’re going to be baking for the holidays anyway, give the men in your life some edible gifts. For something manly, try a homemade spice rub, chocolate-covered bacon, or a bottle of high-end liquor. After all, he can’t complain about something delicious!

Whether he’s your best friend or your dear old dad, he’s not as hard to shop for as you might think. If you’re still stumped, find out more about
